Protect predictable attention
Connection cannot depend entirely on whether the workday happened to go well.
Marriage under professional pressure
When work succeeds by borrowing attention, patience, and emotional energy from home, the marriage often pays before the professional notices the debt.

How work enters the marriage
The most damaging pattern is not always long hours. It is the repeated experience that work receives the best attention and home receives what remains.
That can look like chronic phone checking, irritability, canceling plans, mental absence, one partner carrying the family system alone, or conversations becoming purely logistical.

Where to intervene
Connection cannot depend entirely on whether the workday happened to go well.
Be specific about what the current work pattern is buying and what it is costing. Avoid vague arguments about “balance.”
If overcontrol, conflict avoidance, over-responsibility, or identity-through-work drives the problem, changing the calendar alone will not hold.
What coaching can and cannot do
Individual executive coaching can address the leader’s contribution to the pattern.
It can help with boundaries, stress spillover, conflict, presence, values, and concrete relational behavior. If the central need is couples therapy, acute relationship crisis treatment, or clinical care, that is a different service and should be treated as such.
